WATCH: How Liza Soberano overcame pressure to be Ganda

MANILA, Philippines — “Bagani” star Liza Soberano admitted that at first, she did not feel comfortable being called “Ganda” in the fantasy series.

“Nung una, opo, medyo weird ‘pag tatawagin akong Ganda,” she confessed in an interview with Philstar.com following her launch as new Nivea endorser.

Likewise, she professed that there were times she felt like an ugly duckling, despite being named by The Independent Critics as having the world’s “Most Beautiful Face” for 2017.

“Siguro puberty stages, lahat tayo dumadaan sa awkward stages when we start breaking out. Siguro me baby fats din ako nun. ‘Di naman sa ‘di ko feeling na ‘di ako maganda, I just don’t feel comfortable in my own skin at that time,” she narrated in an interview with the press.

Until now, she said she is not fully happy with her hips.

“Feeling ko po malaki eh. Ako po gusto ko po ‘yung model type ng body — long, slim, very straight. ‘Yung iba naman po ang gusto nila ‘yung may hips, medyo curvy.”

But eventually, she assured, “You’ll learn how to love yourself, your flaws, and matatanggap mo na you’re not perfect and everybody still loves you no matter what.”

She now just laughs at her throwback pictures and awkward stages. “Syempre natatawa po ko sa mga days na ang baduy pa ng poses ko. But it’s nice to look back and say na, ‘Ah, ganito pala ko dati’.”

Eventually, she also got used to being called “Ganda” on and off the camera. “It’s a really beautiful name naman,” she enthused.

She has fully embraced her “Bagani” character since she has been doing it for over a year now.

“I’ve been portraying her so masasabi ko I’ve imbibed her na.”

To stay true to being “Ganda,” Liza makes sure to take care of her skin by washing her face with Nivea cleansing foam in the morning, mid-day, and before going to sleep. She then uses the brand’s MicellAIR cleanser as toner to get rid of dirt, oil, and excess makeup that might block her pores. Finally, she caps off her beauty regimen by patting on ice over her face to close pores.

“Always get rid of makeup before going to bed to allow your skin to breathe and rest,” she advised.  — Videos by Kat Leandicho
