AboitizPower reclaims lead in power generation

MANILA, Philippines — Aboitiz Power Corp. is once again the country’s leading power producer after reclaiming market dominance from San Miguel Corp. (SMC).

AboitizPower commands the top spot with a national market share of 23.86 percent, equivalent to a capacity of about 6.77 million kiloWatts (kW), according to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

The Aboitiz Group’s power generation arm has dominated both Luzon and Mindanao while maintaining a substantial share in the Visayas.

Once the market leader, SMC’s San Miguel Global Power (SMGP) now settles into the second spot with a 20.11-percent share at the national level or about 5.71 million kW in capacity.

First Gen Corp. of the Lopez Group has tightened its grip on third place, holding a national market share of 12.41 percent or around 3.52 million kW.

The MVP Group’s Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), meanwhile, sits at number four with a capacity of about 2.29 million kW, representing 8.06 percent of the country’s total.

Rounding out the top five is the Ayala Group’s ACEN Corp., which accounts for 5.2 percent of the national market or around 1.48 million kW in capacity.

By region, AboitizPower has a market share of 26.95 percent, followed by SMGP (24.93 percent) and First Gen (13.1 percent).

In the Visayas grid, First Gen is the leading power producer with a market share of 20.58 percent, with Meralco closely trailing at 20.09 percent and AboitizPower at 16.49 percent.

With a market share of 14.9 percent, AboitizPower is the dominant force in Mindanao, followed by SMGP and First Gen at 8.86 percent and 2.57 percent, respectively.
