MANILA, Philippines — A subsidiary of Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) has received the green light from the Energy Market Authority (EMA) to build, own and operate two power-generating units in Singapore.

The EMA has awarded the permit to MGen’s PacificLight Power Pte Ltd. (PLP), which owns an 800-megawatt (MW) liquefied natural gas-fired (LNG) power plant in Jurong Island, Singapore.

“PLP is pleased to be awarded the 25-year fast start contract for a 100-MW, hydrogen ready, gas turbine that can be brought from standstill to full load within 18 minutes,” PLP CEO Yu Tat Ming said.

PLP is owned by FPM Power Holdings Ltd. an established regional company combining the joint expertise of MGen and First Pacific Co. Ltd.

“This award marks a significant milestone for our company, and we are committed to delivering the project on time and reliably supporting the energy system,” Ming said.

The fast-start generating units will provide 100 MW of capacity expected by the second quarter of 2025, securing Singapore’s need for uninterrupted power.

Last December, the Energy Market Co. called a request for proposal to ensure that Singapore will continue to have an uninterrupted power supply.

“The generating units by PLP will bolster the reliability and security of Singapore’s power system with the potential to switch to using hydrogen instead of natural gas in the future,” EMA chief executive Ngiam Shih Chun said.

The fast generating units will allow energy to enter the grid immediately from PLP’s LNG power plant in Singapore.

“MGen is proud of the development and recognition of PLP’s capability to provide cleaner power supply to residents of Singapore,” MGenpresident and CEO Jaime Azurin said.
