MANILA, Philippines — The renewable energy arm of conglomerate JG Summit Holdings Inc. has installed one of the largest rooftop-mounted solar energy projects in the country.

Commissioning of Merbau Corp.’s 13.811-megawatt peak solar energy project in Batangas City started in April and will end this month.

The solar project will provide a significant portion of the energy requirements of the fully integrated petrochemical complex of JG Summit that houses JG Summit Olefins Corp. (JGSOC) manufacturing plants and the packaging division of Universal Robina Corp. (URC).

Construction of the solar project, which covered the rooftops of nine buildings, commenced in August 2022.

The project is expected to generate an estimated energy savings of 17.8-gigawatt hours per year and a projected greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 17,000 tons annually from both JGSOC and URC warehouses and building offices within the petrochemical complex.

The project was rolled out in two phases, with the first phase having a capacity of 5.8 MW and the second phase with eight MW.

“This milestone marks a significant step in our journey as we aim to become a leading renewable energy company in the country,” Merbau president and CEO Patrick Henry Go said.

Go said Merbau is looking at a portfolio of projects in partnership with Robinsons Land Corp. for its malls and industrial warehouses, URC for its manufacturing plants and distribution channels, Cebu Pacific, as well as other companies within the Gokongwei group.
