AboitizPower pushing through with LNG plans

Richmond Mercurio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Aboitiz Power Corp. is looking to push through with its liquefied natural gas (LNG) plans, beginning with a 150-megawatt power plant in Cebu.

“There is a team that is working on an LNG program. We’re still looking at LNG as an option in Cebu delivered by later 2026, 2027,” AboitizPower president and CEO Emmanuel Rubio said.

“I think that’s when Cebu would need new capacities,” he said.

Rubio said the Cebu facility is currently under a feasibility study.

He said also under considerations is a gas-fired power plant in Luzon by 2029 or 2030.

“Capacity wise, depends on how big demand would be. I think the sweet spot would be around 1,200 MW in Luzon and Cebu 150 MW,” Rubio said.

AboitizPower and Japan’s JERA Co. Inc. (JERA) have earlier identified potential areas for collaboration across multiple fronts, including joint development of LNG-to-power projects, the fuel sourcing and management of LNG, potential participation in aspects of plant operation and management, and exploration of the use of new generation technologies.

As part of its energy transition, AboitizPower is undertaking aggressive investments in renewable energy which would be supported by plans to eventually shift the company’s baseload focus from coal to gas.

AboitizPower has allotted P190 billion to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 4,600 MW or threefold its current capacity by 2030.

The company serves as the holding company for the Aboitiz Group’s investments in power generation, distribution and retail electricity services.

It is one of the largest power producers in the country with a balanced portfolio of assets located nationwide.
