The substance of Lao Lianben

- Miguel Ramos -

Unquestionably one of the preeminent artists today, Lao Lianben starts 2009 with his first major show of the year which also coincidentally opens the new Blanc Gallery.

Often inspired by words, Lao finds himself translating their meaning onto canvas by transforming abstract concepts or ideas into his visual interpretations. From these inspirations come many of the artist’s pieces including the title piece of this ongoing show, “Substance.”

Although there is no conscious effort on the part of Lao to create a particular series out of certain words, he does find himself repeating some on occasion as he finds new interpretations or physical manifestations for various words and meanings.

Mostly known as an abstract painter, he himself admits that his art has recently been tending more towards the figurative as evidenced by the numerous “Hands” he has in the present show. This series was inspired by, although not necessarily meant to be representative of, the hands of Buddha. Other works that tend towards the figurative include “Head and Zen” and “Levitation” which actually depicts a man standing on his head.

There is actually so much more to Lao’s artwork than meets the eye, that a complete understanding of the painting’s concept almost necessitates a knowledge of the title. Sometimes it is a mere description such as in “Hands” or “Elements.” Sometimes it is an interpretation such as in the title work “Substance.” And sometimes it is humor such as in “Buddhist Television” which he humorously points out is like a plasma screen with only one channel.
