Since Joy Barcoma’s dramatic exit from “Dogshow Divas” is the buzz du jour, I asked one of the main hosts of the popular podcast, Macoy Dubs, for the story behind the story.
Joy was tapped as pinch hitter for Macoy in some episodes when he could not join his co-host Baus Rufo due to other commitments. It elicited mixed reactions. Some listeners suggested that Joy should replace Macoy, which he responded to humorously, while others clamored for Macoy because they missed his tandem with Baus. As Joy’s stint became more frequent, the bashing began. So, to protect her peace, Joy decided to quit the show last Aug 31. It’s not a case of Macoy versus Joy. It’s more of a cautionary tale about the power of social media.
“I am sad that Joy is quitting ‘Dogshow Divas,’ but of course, as one of the executive producers, I wish her well on her next chapter. Joy and I are on good terms, and I look forward to working with her in the future, be it podcast-related or not.
“To be honest, I never felt threatened by Joy. I know my place in the podcast, and I am welcoming to others. I really appreciate Joy as well kasi nandun siya when I became busy. I am grateful to her.
“To the bashers, I hope we can be more kind online and be mindful of our comments. The podcast is there to make our lives lighter. So, we can laugh more. With all the happenings right now, all we need is kindness, understanding and not hate.”
Korean x Pinoy = ‘The Guardian’
Korean “Oppas” and Pinoy “Papas” join forces in “The Guardian,” which is now showing in cinemas. Directed by Jeong Jang Hwan, it is top-billed by K-pop idol Nam Woo-hyun and Hallyu star Park Eun-hye. They are joined by Wilbert Ross, Eric Ejercito, Joko Diaz and Jeric Raval. Pinay beauties Yassi Pressman and Ashtine Olviga are also part of the milestone collaboration.
The high-octane thriller centers on a son’s dangerous mission to save his mother from a crime syndicate. Filmed entirely in the Philippines by a Korean crew, watch how our local stars get “KIMCHIfied.”

Wilbert: “It’s my first time to do action and portray a villain. It tested the limits of what my body can do. I was blown away by the Korean stunt group. They train big-time Korean actors. I am thankful to them for egging me on when I felt that I could not pull it off.”
Eric: “All of us Pinoy actors auditioned for our roles. It was nerve-wracking. Big names in Korean showbiz were the ones who conducted the auditions. They made us do a lot of improvisations.”
Wilbert: “What we can pick up from Koreans is that we need solid support from the government. With unlimited budget, Pinoy filmmakers and actors can do more.”
Eric: “Humor is Pinoy. But the Korean’s fondness for taekwondo is very present in our film. The Korean title of our movie is ‘48 hours.’”
Wilbert: “We showed Koreans that we got world-class locations. There’s more to the Philippines than Manila. We made them feel the bayanihan spirit.”
Eric: “We had 10 translators on the set. Despite the language barrier, we were able to bond somehow.”
