Koji Arsua - The Philippine Star

Feed your depression at Lang Leav’s book signing

MANILA, Philippines - You’ve probably seen those beautifully depressing poems shared on Facebook. Those are by Lang Leav, poet and author, who has been so popular that she is back in Manila for the second time this year to sign copies of her new book Lullabies. Like her first book Love and Misadventure, Lullabies is a series of quotes and poems on love in both forms: finding it and losing it. Take this quote for instance: “If only you could have met me now, how different it would be. How much I have changed. How I have grown. I learned so much from all the mistakes I made with you. I just wish I had made them with someone else.” If that doesn’t break your heart, maybe this will: “‘What was it like to lose him?’ asked Sorrow. There was a long pause before I responded: It was like hearing every goodbye ever said to me — said all at once.” Today, she will be at the East Atrium, Shangri-La Plaza East Wing, and tomorrow at Powerbooks Greenbelt 4, both at noon. She’s ready to hear all our sob stories, this author’s included.

Watch ‘Prinsipe Munti’

A character in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s book The Little Prince once said, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” The saying also applies to the book, since you have to imagine the glorious worlds the prince takes the narrator to. That’s not the case with Prinsipe Munti, a local stage adaptation of the most-read and most-translated French book. In the book, a pilot crashes into the Sahara Desert, where he meets a young boy who teaches him love and childlike curiosity. This version (which you can see), is translated by Layeta Bucoy and directed by Tuxqs Rutaquio, and will have music, shadow play and puppetry. If you think that’s kid stuff, you’re missing the point of the story. Prinsipe Munti is being staged today and tomorrow at CCP’s Little Theater. Tickets are available at http://www.ticketworld.com.ph.
