The sprite of Christmas

- Bea J. Ledesma -

MANILA, Philippines - Twenty-three-year-old artist Kristine Caguiat is the artist behind this month’s YStyle logo.

Instead of Christmas balls and cheesy seasonal effects, Caguiat went the opposite route and channeled Norman Rockwell. “ I think it’s a good idea to bring back a little childlike mischief and innocence to the spirit of Christmas.” she tells YStyle. “I was scouring old children’s books and came across this vintage, juvenile style. It’s a far cry from anything Pixar, definitely. It also reminded me of some vintage Christmas decor we used to have at home sans the smell of mothballs.”

Capturing impish sprites mid-play, she combined a mix of scanned and illustrated elements, colored with gouache.

“The little kids are reminiscent of my lola’s ceramic figurine collection which is a cross between cute and creepy at the same time,” she recalls. “She used to have this huge cabinet at the foot of the stairs to display everything, and it would scare me senseless as a child. Now, I just miss seeing it.”

To celebrate the season, Caguiat will be doing what we do best this time of year: “Aside from eating all the lechon I can until I pass out, I can’t wait to spend Christmas in Iloilo with my family. The beaches there are beautiful at this time of the year!”
