Be a ‘Sige Mom’ and lead your kids to discoveries, adventures

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Motherhood is considered among the toughest of professions. After all, moms are expected to not only nurture and care for their children, but also to raise and shape them into well-rounded members of society.

Supporting mommies in their mission to foster their kids’ holistic growth and development is Breeze, one of the country’s leading detergent brands. It is calling moms everywhere to be Sige Moms and say yes to learning, discoveries, and adventure, even if it means getting dirty or having stained clothes.  The brand strongly believes that Sige Moms should allow their kids to be kids, enabling them to learn better through active play and experiential learning.

Child development expert Tanya Velasco of Gurufirm Corporation, who is Breeze’s resident Sige Guru, dishes out important insights, sage advice on raising smart and active kids, and the benefits of being a Sige Mom. She says that the role of Sige Moms is not limited to caring for their kids. “Our job is to let them explore, play, and experience the outdoors, forming relationships with different people.”

As Sige Guru and mom of one, Tanya stresses the importance of being present and engaged in the lives of one’s children, especially in their formative years. “Research says that having a constant caregiver — in most cases, the mom — gives a child a positive self-identity early on,” she shares. “This enables the child to feel safe and secure about himself/herself and his/her environment, and allows him/her to grow into a confident person who is more stable emotionally.”

Tanya urges moms to spend time and have fun with their children as much as they can, while they still can. “What’s great about Breeze’s “sige sa mantsa, sige sa learning” philosophy is it honors a kid’s freedom to explore and learn by doing,” she says. “As we all know, time passes by very quickly. Sige Moms should honor this gift of time and understand that children will only be children once. We must remember to let our kids be.”

Tanya encourages Sige Moms to make quality time for their kids a priority and be creative in coming up with activities they can do together. Not only does this build a stronger, more loving relationship between mothers and their little ones, it also nurtures creativity and imagination, teaches important skills, and builds lasting memories. “You don’t have to keep buying toys for them,” says Tanya. “The best materials are actually the ones you don’t buy and just find at home — sand, water, dirt, blocks, and recyclable materials. For kids and their imagination, the possibilities are endless.”
