Beauty and the breast

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Art, music, and enlightenment were the themes when MediCard, a leading HMO in the country, and Friends Under the Tree Foundation presented “Transcending Boundaries,” an exhibition showing breast paintings of real women, in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Held at the MediCard Lifestyle Center, located along Paseo cor Sen.Gil Puyat Avenue Makati City, the exhibit featured paintings by artist Sequi Cu Unjieng showing breasts in all of their natural, non-surgically-enhanced glory, radiating strength and beauty.

Medicard Philippines president Dr Nicky Montoya welcomed guests to the event and lauded the meaningful collection of Cu-unjieng as a great way to promote awareness on the deadly disease.

Explaining the concept behind her masterpieces, Cu-unjieng said, “Not only do the paintings focus on the individuality of the women, the body of work also gives a sense that all women share the same feelings, roles, and aspirations. The use of mixed media highlights the idea that women escape definition and are a composite of many qualities and attributes.”

While guests enjoyed looking at the paintings and the sumptuous buffet, talented siblings Denise and Julian Sese serenaded guests with love songs and ballads.

Dr. Aldine Basa, who heads the Breast Clinic at the Medicard Lifestyle Center, spoke briefly during the event to remind women of the importance of early detection and the affordable tests available at the Center to help in preventing the disease.

Before the end of the opening event, some pieces were sold out — a good thing for women cannot afford the tests for early breast cancer detection because they are the beneficiaries of the exhibit, under the “Ating Dibdibin” breast cancer screening program through the I Can Serve Foundation.
