Smart gives cleft patients something to smile about

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  Leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has powered Operation Smile Philippines’ mobile application, OpSmile Mobile, with 3G handsets to make reliable cleft patient care more accessible in the country.

Developed by the Ateneo Java Wireless Center in partnership with Smart, the mobile app facilitates paperless registration and records of patients with cleft conditions.  With the app, Operation Smile volunteers can take photos of patients using a mobile phone camera, key in patient information, and send the data to a central web-based database that specialists can later access.

The mobile app would help volunteers provide accessible and efficient cleft patient care, and ultimately, pave the way for the treatment of more beneficiaries in the country.  Statistics show that 4,000 kids are born with cleft conditions in the Philippines each year.

Originally developed for Java-enabled mobile devices, the OpSmile mobile app would soon be made available to Android phones as well.

The deployment of the mobile app is part of a series of activities to celebrate Operation Smile’s 30th year of making kids with cleft conditions smile.

A series of medical missions will also be done in Naga, Cebu, Cavite, Cagayan de Oro, Koronadal, General Santos, Pampanga, and Manila to commemorate the international organization’s anniversary celebration dubbed “The Journey Home.”

In partnership with Smart, Operation Smile Philippines will be able to provide an estimated 1,500 cleft surgeries and at least 3,000 dental treatments.
