Helping our help enrich themselves

MOMMY TALK - MOMMY TALK By Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan -
School has started and I’m glad that I’ve received positive feedback from folks about educating our helpers. I am very encouraged that many employers care for a brighter future for their helpers even if it means letting them go one day for greener pastures. Here are more updates:

Dear Maricel and Lilibeth,

I, too, believe in helping our househelp get an education especially since most of them become helpers for lack of money to continue school. Even if there’s a risk of losing them sooner though (as most friends have said) I feel that I would want them to move on eventually to a better life where they are doing what they really want to do and are with their families. Kahit short stay, kung sulit naman and they were productive, kaysa puro konsumisyon at sakit ng ulo, OK na rin.

Suggestion though: Make them pay for a significant portion, if not the entire tuition fee, so they value it more. – TMO

Dear Maricel,

Most helpers haven’t even finished elementary. You can let them take the yearly Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPT) of DepEd which is given to overaged people who have not finished elementary. I think those who are over 15 can take it. Details are in http://www.deped.gov.ph/OrgNetre.htm.

Blessings,

Sheila

I would like to inquire about the schedule for your "I Love You, Yaya" seminar course. Is it possible for me to enroll my yaya? How much will this cost and what is the duration of the course?

I would appreciate it very much if you provide me with all the details the soonest possible time.

Thank you and God bless! – Gigie Dela Cruz

Gigie,

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, we will be conducting the "I Love You, Yaya" seminar series on July 6 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. I am pleased to inform you that we have modified our curriculum to enable yayas to complete the course in a day instead of the usual two days. Because of it, we have also lowered the cost to P1,200 with the same quality and fun. The fee also includes lunch and snacks. Here’s the summary of topics:

• Self-Awareness/Health, Hygiene & Nutrition for Both Yaya & Child

• Knowing the Child (Developmental Milestone & Understanding their Behavior), Creating a Stimulating Environment

• First Aid, Emergencies & Common Pediatric Illnesses

• Effective Communication with Children/Family & Yaya Partnership

The seminar will be held at 868 Tropical Ave., BF Homes, Las Piñas. For details and reservations, call 826-96-28 (Donna or Vivian) or 435-42-81/434-01-39 (Ana). To ensure the quality of the seminar, there will be limited slots only so make your reservations early. – Maricel
