MANILA, Philippines — Following the recent breakdown of his girlfriend Sarah Geronimo in Las Vegas allegedly due to burn out, singer and actor Matteo Guidicelli has broken his silence on a hot topic nowadays: depression.

In an interview with Philstar.com prior to the launch of his exclusive jeans line in collaboration with fashion designer Avel Bacudio and online shopping platform Shopee, Matteo shared his views on depression, which recently struck many stars, reportedly including Sarah.

“It’s a serious topic. It’s a very, very serious topic. I have friends who go through these things,” Matteo confessed.

He shared that Sarah’s recent single, “Sandata,” is about mental illness and psychological struggles like depression.

“It’s something that should be given much attention… It’s sad to know that these things are happening especially with the youth today. The younger guys are going through this. It’s very, very common.”

For those who have friends or family members suffering from depression, Matteo advised them, first, to pray for those in pain, and second, to motivate their loved ones to get into a passion, like sports, that could take their mind off their depression.

“I pray for everybody out there, that whoever going through this could get through it,” he espoused. “It’s normal that people go through depression and these things, but it’s how they handle it. If they have a strong force around them that could sustain them.”

He admitted that he also has his own dark moments.  “My life’s not perfect. There are times I wake up and ask why some things happen to me. But I’ve never fallen that deep into depression like some of my friends and people I know. But I don’t want to imagine. I’m sure it’s very crazy and very deep. So I just pray for them and try to introduce to them fitness, sports, the gym, triathlon, get your mind into something else. I’m not an expert, but these are things that I know.”

Whenever he feels sad, Matteo, who is a triathlete, engages into sports, and it has also become one of his ways to help relieve Sarah from burn out and anxiety.

“I believe sports is a big door you can enter to fight things like this. I’m a big advocate of sports and I think everybody should go through sports because sports molds a person eh— character, discipline, passion. It’s what has happened to me.”
