From Mina de Gracia to Paraluman

- Danny Dolor -

MANILA, Philippines – Hers is one of the most beautiful faces ever to grace the big screen, compared to the Hollywood immortal goddess Greta Garbo. She was also an award-winning actress.

The beautiful actress in reference is Paraluman, who died some weeks back at 85.

Paraluman, Sigrid Sophia Von Giese in real life, started in pre-war movies as Mina de Gracia, using the moniker up to 1940. But in the 1941 picture Paraluman, she used the screen name Paraluman. Her leading man in the movie, Fernando Poe, reportedly suggested the change in her name. Mona Lisa co-starred in Paraluman, which opened Feb. 1941.

A few months later, April, Poe, Lisa and Paraluman starred once more in Bayani ng Buhay.

After the Liberation in 1946, Paraluman joined Sampaguita Pictures, starring in La Paloma, Simbahang Pawid, Sor Remedios, Sa Kabilang Buhay.

In the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, Paraluman appeared in Hongkong Holiday, Lydia, Veronica, Sino ang Maysala?, Anino ni Bathala, Limos na Dalangin, Pitong Puso, Ako ang Katarungan, Dahil sa Isang Bulaklak, Lilet, Mister Mo Lover Boy Ko.

She won the FAMAS Best Actress for Sino ang Maysala? in 1957.

The theme song of Paraluman was sung by Poe and Paraluman. It goes:

Poe: Ikaw ang aking Paraluman

Sasambahin sa araw-araw

Iibigin at susuyuin kailan pa man…

Paraluman: Ikaw naman ang aking buhay

At tangi kong kaligayahan

Pagka’t ikaw at ikaw lamang

Ang tunay kong minamahal…

Poe: Anong sarap ng ating buhay

Aking hirang

Ako’y iyo’t ikaw ay akin

Aking lamang…

Poe: Anong sarap ng ating buhay

Aking hirang

Ako’y iyo’t ikaw ay akin

Aking lamang…

Paraluman: Kung ikaw ang aking kapiling

Kahit saan

Mamatay man ay maligaya

Ang aking pusong nagmamahal.

The theme song’s words and music were by Constancio de Guzman. — RKC
