Orionids meteor shower visible next week
MANILA, Philippines — The Orionids meteor shower will light up the night sky from Oct. 17 to 25, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has said.
Up to 15 meteors per hour may be observed under favorable sky conditions especially during its peak on Oct. 21 to 22.
The best time to view the Orionids is just after midnight and right before dawn.
The Orionids – one of the most beautiful meteor showers of the year – can be seen by viewers from both hemispheres.
Astronomers suggest that observers in the northern hemisphere look towards the southeastern sky, while those in the southern hemisphere look at the northeastern sky.
The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said Orionids move very fast, “at a speed of 147,300 miles per hour.”
“At such an enormous speed, the meteors don’t last long, burning up very high in the atmosphere,” NASA said.
The Orionids is one of two meteor showers associated with the Comet Halley. It radiates from the constellation Orion.
