Soil conditioner found to lower poultry mortality

- Ramon Ma. Epino -
The Quirino State College’s poultry project had been losing money due to high mortality rate. That was until they discovered that a certain soil conditioner was not only an excellent growth enhancer but also an effective disease prevention agent for animals and fish.

In December 2004, the college was alarmed with the high mortality rate of the chicks in the poultry farm due to the cool weather associated with other factors. It was then that the new product was introduced to the college by Chong Ken Foo.

The project proponents conducted an experiment by mixing 10 grams of Exquisite soil conditioner mixed with 40 liters of water. The solution was given to the chicks throughout the experiment. The result was remarkable as the deaths of many chickens were finally checked.

From then on, the solution was continuously administered to all the birds in the poultry farm. It was observed that the birds became resistant to diseases and finally regained their agility as shown in their improved growth.

With this experience, a group of researchers tried the product to the broilers. One hundred broilers were segregated after brooding with 50 birds with Exquisite solution while the other 50 birds served as control (not given the solution).

The solution was used for the duration of the experiment The results were heavier birds (an average of 1.69 kg in just 36 days) compared with 1.2 kg mean weight of birds that were not treated with Exquisite solution. An amount of P800 which is supposed to buy additional feeds for the other 50 birds for the remaining nine days before they reach marketable weight was saved.

The good result caught the attention of students and other people in the community. For the first time, a return on investments (ROI) of 43.31 percent was obtained from the 50 experimental birds.
