Driven by boredom, Pinoys to indulge in year-end shopping

MANILA, Philippines — Boredom is the top reason why Filipinos are expected to shop this holiday season, especially during year-end sale promos.

According to Finder.com’s latest shopping survey, more Filipinos are eager to shop in the much-awaited monthly sale events before end-2021 like 11.11 and 12.12.

At least 52 percent of Filipino adults, equivalent to some 37.3 million people, plan to shop during the sale season for various reasons, according to the survey.

However, pure boredom was the most popular reason provided, with 30 percent of respondents saying this is why they will be adding to their shopping carts.

Only 15 percent said they will shop because the sale season provides good value.

“A big chunk of the Filipino population are planning to shop the end-of-year sale this year, with many doing so to simply stave away boredom, while others are looking to take advantage of the great deals on offer,” Finder.com’s consumer advocate Susannah Binsted said.

“With people spending more time at home over the past 18 months, it’s not surprising so many people are looking to shop away their boredom,” she said.

Binsted said people would opt to have fun with their shopping to make up for lost time after travel and hospitality took a backseat.

“If you’re shopping out of boredom, it’s a good idea to set and stick to a budget so you don’t go overboard. The sale can be a great time to pick up a product for less – but only if it’s something you truly need,” she said.

Further, the survey showed that Filipinos aged 45 to 54 are most likely to shop during the markdown promo, with 62 percent saying they will make a purchase.

Surprisingly, men are more likely to shop during the sale season with 53 percent of respondents saying they will make a purchase versus 50 percent of women.
