What are your appetites

- Francis J. Kong -

“THE BEST QUESTION EVER, A Revolutionary Approach to Decision Making” is a very provocative title for a book. I am encouraging you to get a copy of this book by Andy Stanley. Read it, then give it to another, and ask that person to do the same.

I have read the entire book. Allow me to share parts of it with you, along with some personal commentaries.

Andy says, “I downloaded some videocasts under the category “Comedy and Humor”. I kid you not when I say every single one of the 15-plus materials would contain explicit materials. The so-called “comedians” would either swear or make reference to sex in every single material. And let me say this, not a single one of them carries enough material of average intellectual substance that could add to my knowledge. In other words, listening and watching these trash is an effective tool to make one dumb and dumber. What a waste of memory space! The best way to measure my thoughts and comments on these is to delete them. You and I are not living in a morally neutral environment. If we are not on guard, the culture will sweep us into chaos and destroy our future.”

I was smiling when my book distributor people informed me that my latest book is selling very well. How could you miss a book with a title that says “DUH?!”? It was risky but I went ahead with it. I coined the title as an acronym that means Developing Unhealthy Habits, and attached the phrase, “Why would intelligent people do stupid things?”

After going through Andy Stanley’s book, I realized that the reason why intelligent and highly educated people do dumb things is because they have been careless. They have let down their guard and have allowed culture to pull them into its’ modern-day filth.

Stanley says, “Every day we interface with a culture of sensuality, gluttony, and greed. Ours is a culture that encourages us in the most provocative ways to do everything in our power to try and satisfy appetites that can never be fully and finally satisfied.”

“These are evil days,” Andy says in his book. “Gone are the days when you had to go looking for trouble. Trouble is in every street corner, on every page of just about every magazine. Trouble is dripping from every billboard. Trouble drives across our television screens and calls to us from our computers.”

By far, the biggest online moneymaker is pornography. Consider this: American men spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year to look at pictures of women on their computer screens. “Hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Andy is right.

We certainly are not living in a morally neutral environment.

If we don’t pay attention, we will end up paying a price for our carelessness. If we aren’t intentionally cautious, we may end up unintentionally corralled by some vice we’ve always condemned.

Great book. Reminds me that you and I are all fallen creatures. That sinful nature within us never sleeps. This is why you and I need a Savior. And apart from God, there is no hope for mankind. Be alert. Think. Trust in God and be equipped with the power to live wisely and perhaps even change the world.
