Best of the Week: Topless Twitpics, Nora's nicotine and GaGa's guns

New Holiday of the Week: Anne Curtis Day

MANILA, Philippines - Not even Pedring could rain on Anne Curtis’ parade! This week, in the midst of the storms, Anne Curtis proved to be that one ray of sunshine. Fans unofficially declared Sept. 28 as Anne Curtis Day, and with good reason. Anne’s movie, No Other Woman, her album “Annebisyosa” and her cover for Rogue’s entertainment issue all came out on that day. Tarush!

OA of the Week: Father Robert Reyes on Nora Aunor

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, or so they say. In the case of Nora Aunor, this certainly holds true. Barely two months after her celebrated homecoming, Ate Guy is already under fire for posing on the cover of a magazine with a cigarette in hand. Best in scandal! Upon seeing the cover, Fr. Robert Reyes of Smoke Free Philippines was utterly scandalized, saying “Gusto mo ba gayahin ka namin? Nora, you are ill-advised. You think you are moving forward, it’s a step backwards.” Father Reyes, you don’t know what you’re in for. Wait ‘til you see Anne Curtis on the cover of this month’s Rogue!

Humility Award: Lito Lapid

Senator Lito Lapid admitted earlier this week that he has trouble following the RH Bill debates because of his lack of English skillz. We suggest for Senator Lapid to go full-on Ms. Universe mode and hire an interpreter. Hopefully when he gets over his English speaking hang-ups, he can improve his attendance  he was reportedly marked absent for a month last year for reasons unknown.

Natural Disaster of the Week: Pedring and Quiel

We will never forget how Typhoon Ondoy ravaged Manila, and two years later almost to the day, another angry storm paid us a visit. This week, power lines went out, students were sent home (thank God, CHED realized that college students aren’t water-proof after all), commuters had their own Christopher Lao episodes, and the US Embassy and Sofitel very nearly went underwater. Now, while the madness brought about by Pedring is just about over, another storm is looming on the horizon. Let’s hope Quiel takes it easy on us, or else we’ll be stuck cleaning up the mess until Christmas.

Goodbye of the Week: Anthony Linsangan

Young actress Camille Prats was widowed this week when her husband, Anthony Linsangan, succumbed to nasopharyngeal cancer. He was 32. “I was promised a lifetime. I never thought it would be this short,” Camille said. The weather seemed to mourn with Camille and the Linsagan family, as heavy rains accompanied the burial. Our condolences, Camille. We really do hate it when couples’ love stories are cut short.

Hero of the Week: Sean Penn

This week, Sean Penn played himself in a gripping story of the rescue of two American hikers, Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer, who have been imprisoned in Iran for supposed espionage. Penn reportedly flew to Venezuela himself to appeal directly to President Hugo Chavez to negotiate the prisoners’ release. True enough, President Chavez later spoke to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and soon, Fattal and Bauer were released. In fairness, kinareer! Forget the Oscars, Nobel Peace Prize na toh!

Cougar of the Week: Demi Moore

We’ve seen a lot of nude photos these past weeks, but nobody does it better than cougar extraordinaire, Demi Moore, whose Twitter account is rife with propositions to Ashton Kutcher and a good amount of photos featuring herself in various states of undress. Her latest titillating tweet  a topless photo, with the caption “Remember… you’ve got your own back” leaves us feeling a little bit cheated by the genetic lottery. We have nothing else to say but siya na. She already!

Giveaway of the Week: Berry, aka Padfoot

Seth Rogen, who recently admitted to bawling like a baby during animal rescue ads, will probably be shedding a few tears at the news that Berry, the black German Shepherd who played Padfoot in the Harry Potter movies, is being given away by his owner. You’d think the dog would be living the high life ala Beverly Hills Chihuahua after playing the Gary Oldman’s dog counterpart. It’s almost blasphemous that Berry’s owner, stuntman Paul Thompson, is giving him away because Berry takes too much time to take care of. Then again, it’s not as if there isn’t a long line of Potter fanatics raring to take this dog home and watch him 24/7 to see if he suddenly turns into Sirius Black.

Mother Monster of the Week: Lady Gaga

A week after 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer killed himself over bullying, Lady Gaga, the mother monster of gay teens everywhere, spoke up and declared her stand against bullying: “Bullying must become illegal. It is a hate crime. I am meeting with our President. I will not stop fighting.” The avant-garde star stayed true to her word and spoke to President Obama at a fundraiser last Sunday. If the bullies knew any better, they would start playing nice right now. After all, a lady who wears a bra made out of machine guns isn’t someone you’d want to cross.

Festival of the Week: Oktoberfest

When the “ber” months begin, everyone starts looking forward to Christmas, but for beer lovers, there is something that happens much sooner than that that gets their livers jumping. Oktoberfest, the yearly festival of beer is upon us again, and different bars and pubs are opening their doors and filling their beer mugs. We suggest you get your drink on, as many bars and pubs are having their own Oktoberfest specials. You’ll have the rest of the year to work that beer belly off, anyway.

Upcoming Movie of the Week: Vice Ganda in ‘Praybeyt Benjamin’

You’d never think that an actor who played a person-turned-horse in Petrang Kabayo could ever pull off playing a soldier. Then again, this is Vice Ganda we’re talking about. The comedian is starring in an upcoming movie, Praybeyt Benjamin, in which he plays a guy who goes through military training to save his grandfather from terrorists. How’s that for versatility?

Host of the Week: Selena Gomez

While her taste in men is questionable, her hosting skils certainly aren’t. This week, 19-year-old pop star and tween actress Selena Gomez is set to host the MTV Europe Music Awards in November, following the footsteps of previous hosts Justin Timberlake, Eva Longoria, and Katy Perry. The young star sure has a great feat ahead of her, but we’re hoping she’ll get through it with flying colors. Perhaps having the Biebs in the audience will help keep her calm.
