Horry, Drexler: Rockets ’’95 win best, sweetest

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - As an NBA player, Robert Horry didn’t have a collection of trophies like most his All-Star peers aside from making it into the All-Rookie second team in 1993.

But he could brag about winning more championships than no less than Michael Jordan, considered as the greatest player of all time, himself as he won seven championships against His Airness’ six.

Horry, now 43, won his seven championships with three different teams, two for the Houston Rockets in 1994-1995, three with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2000 to 2002 and two more wins for the San Antonio Spurs in 2005 and 2007.

When asked what’s the most memorable, Horry quickly said it’s with Houston in 1995.

“All is memorable but nothing beats the title we won in 1995 when we beat almost all the best teams back then without the home court advantage,” said Horry, here as one of the NBA’s ambassadors as part of the first-ever NBA Global Games in Manila to be highlighted by the Indiana Pacers-Houston Rockets pre-season game on Thursday at the MOA Arena.

Clyde “The Glide” Drexler, also a member of that 1995 champion team, agrees.

“Definitely, that was a memorable moment for me. We were the sixth seed back then and we beat the best teams one by one,” said the 51-year-old Drexler, a 10-time NBA All-Star and a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.

As champion coaches?

“I want to coach but I’m waiting for the perfect time,” said Horry.

“Why not?” said Drexler.
