Pacman to motivate RP bets in Beijing; GMA also there

-

Once he gets to Beijing, one of the early tasks boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao will have to perform is to deliver a motivational speech before the Filipino athletes.

“I’m quite sure he’ll have time for this. So other than watching some of the action, we can gather our athletes before him,” said RP chef-de-mission Monico Puentevella.

“He can talk to his fellow athletes, share his vision of winning,” added Puentevella of Pacquiao who has also been designated as RP flag-bearer in the opening rites.

The Beijing Olympics will start on Aug. 8 (08/08/08) at 8 p.m. and the Philippine delegation leaves Manila on Aug. 5. Officials are also hoping Pacquiao can join them that day.

“It’s better if Manny goes with the rest of the delegation,” said RP Team secretariat head Moying Martelino.

Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez said President Arroyo will be there to provide the needed support to the 15 Pinoy athletes vying for fame and fortune.

Ramirez said based on tradition, the members of the RP Team will pay a courtesy call before the President in Malacañang. But there’s no date yet when this would take place.

Ramirez said it’s the first time in history, or at least in recent history, the Chief Executive will join the athletes in the Olympics. Not Cory Aquino, Fidel V. Ramos or Joseph Estarda did this.

“It’s the first time that the President is joining us in the Olympics. And it’s not only the President but the heads of the Senate and House sports committees,” said Ramirez.

“Definitely that’s a good sign of support our athletes are getting,” added the PSC chief of Sen. Gringo Honasan and Rep. Cesar Jalosjos joining the delegation.

“This is the support our athletes need. And we hope this will keep the ball rolling even after the Beijing Olympics,” he said.  – Abac Cordero
