MP Turbo riders rout field in Subic grand prix

-
Zed-Gulf Oil-MP Turbo Racing Team drivers Carlos Anton and Monching Gutierrez lived up to expectations by routing the opposition in the 2001 Subic GP Series Sunday at the Subic Bay Freeport.

Anton grabbed the top prize in the sixth round of the SVI Production Class and Class A of the Philippine Junior Touring Car Championship by outdriving TEC Team driver Carlo Pastor at the start to anchor his team to a 1-2 finish.

Veteran karter and saloon driver George Apacible finished second in the Production Class and first in Class B of the PJTCC.

Anton’s win was just reward after he placed third in the earlier crash-marred fifth round of the same class.

Anton took an early lead in the round but lost it after dicing and scraping metal with eventual second placer Enzo Pastor, the younger brother of Carlo. The duel between Anton and Pastor allowed the stalking Miko David to pass and claim first place.

Monching Gutierrez and comebacking newscaster Manolet Llige duplicated the feat of their veteran teammates by finishing 1-2 in the sixth round of the SVI Challenge Cup.

Gutierrez engaged the father of the Pastor clan -- Tom Pastor -- in an exciting duel in the early laps of the race, which saw them alternating as frontrunner.

Pastor, however, retired in the midst of battle after getting his car stuck in the tire barriers as he entered the chicane.

Llige took over the second spot to earn his first podium finish for the season. Privateer novice driver John Mark Ong climbed to third spot to complete the podium cast.
