NUEVA ECIJA, Philippines — An Army trooper was killed in an encounter with communist rebels in Laur town in this province on Sunday.

The fatality, whose identity is being withheld until after his family is notified, died while being treated at the Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center.

The firefight between troopers of the Army’s 84th Infantry Brigade and at least 10 New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas occurred at around 4:37 p.m. in Barangay San Fernando, according to Col. Richard Caballero, Nueva Ecija police director.

Authorities have yet to confirm if the rebels suffered injuries or casualties.

Meanwhile, in Negros Occidental, four of five guerrilla fronts of the NPA have been declared “dismantled” by the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (ID).

The dismantling of the rebel fronts was a result of the military’s focused and continuous operations against the NPA since 2018, according to Lt. Col. J-Jay Javines, civil military operations chief of the 3rd ID.
