Sing when you’re winning

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  If The xx happens to be your favorite band, this ought to be your favorite contest.

Sing your way to a chance at one of five pairs of Gold tickets to “The xx live in Manila.” Battle it out karaoke-style (or with a cover of your choice) three days before the show on July 27, 7 p.m. at Fred Perry in Bonifacio High Street Central. Contestants are expected to be judged on their creativity (50%), quality (30%), and audience impact (20%).

How to join? Simply sign up to one of our 15 slots by sending Fred Perry a message on Twitter or Instagram (@fredperrrymanila) containing your name and contact details. Only two microphones and a small audio system will be provided, so if you wish to do covers, you would need to bring your own gear. Five winners will be awarded a pair of Gold tickets that same evening, so go for gold and break a leg, man. And remember to stay tuned to their channels (@fredperrymanila) for the People’s Choice winner.

The xx, of course, are an English indie band formed in London in ‘05. Their ‘09 album “xx” not only ranked highly on many best of the year lists (first for The Guardian and second for NME),  but also won the Mercury Music Prize for their debut album. They’ve also played shows just about everywhere but here—from festivals like Coachella and Austin City Limits to all over their homeland, winning both the mainstream and hip  stream.

Manila is luckier than lucky to have The xx perform in Manila on July 30, 7 p.m. at NBC Tent in The Fort, thanks to Random Minds Production. It’s going to be fun one, also since the band is at its prime more than ever, having released a new album late last year called “Coexist.”

See you there, but sing it square first at Fred Perry’s karaoke contest.
