Mark Schultz, air head

- From the Philippine Star’s YS -
Pumping adrenaline is his main gig; staring danger in the face his major drift. He broke a knee once and also tears some ligamens every now and then, but he gamely brushes them off as temporary setbacks. Twenty-two-year-old BMX rider cum skateboarder Mark Schultz faced all physical odds squarely and went on to achieve perfection in the one thing he’d literally die for – extreme sports.

A strong contender in the extreme games held in Indonesia where he garnered a coveted place in the BMX competition, Schultz was part of the Philippine team that whacked its competitors. Recently seen in action in the Asian X-Tour at the Goldcrest Park in Ayala Center, Makati where he bagged first place, Schultz proudly wears the colors of Airwalk as the shoebrand of choice of BMX riders and skateboarders.

"It’s the desire of the beating the odds and coming out victorious in a dangerous sport like this that keeps me going. I must have fallen a thousand times, but the most important thing for me is to be able to perfect my strokes and somersaults. That’s all that matters," he says.

For the longest time, Schultz has relied on Airwalk shoes which carry sport-specific lines. For instance, for skateboarding, Schultz trusts his Airwalk Shifty skate shoes for their good gum sole and shock-absorbing features. For riding, he dons his Airwalk Transit which boasts 100 percent synthetic Nubuck and Vapor Mesh Upper midsole construction and Capone Abrasion Resistance materials. The Airwalk Hybrid Skeller also catches his fancy with its leather upper, stretch lycra throat opening and Eva outsole and midsole. Most riders, however, go for the One Series, Airwalk’s vintage style that suits the adventure.

Schultz also says that the most important thing is to gear up for safety. Filipinos are particularly notorious for disregarding safety rules, but with life and limb at stake in both BMX riding and skateboarding, nobody can afford to ignore safety. Schultz learned this the hard way.

"I thought I was invincible. That’s the common mistake, and you only learn that when you’re injured. My left knee had to undergo surgery and until now I still have to wear a brace," he recounts. Schultz admonishes youngsters never to forget to wear a helmet and padding.

Style, safety and fashion from a pro.
