Crush ng bayan Kyan Douglas on his first crush, girl crushes, and upcoming marriage

- Cecile Van Straten -
Apart from the fact that he was probably born good-looking, Kyan is very well known for his expertise in skincare, hair and fitness.

In 2004 he was hired by L’Oreal as the first-ever male endorser of products for both men and women. He also recently launched his book Beautified: Secrets For Women to Look Great and Feel Fabulous.

Last year he was named one of People magazine’s "50 Most Beautiful People."

No wonder Kyan is probably the most popular "crush ng bayan" among the Fab Five because of his boyish looks. In person, he does not disappoint. He was nice and warm, almost teddy bear cuddly. Oh, I wish I could keep him.

I can’t keep him. We all know why.

Everyone has a crush on you, Kyan. My question is, who is your crush?

Wow. Well, my first crush is my partner of three years, Greg Durham. And we actually just got engaged, so we’re going to have a ceremony in the States in May 2007. And unfortunately, it won’t be legally binding for us.

You could go to Amsterdam.

We could, or we could go to Vermont or Massachusetts, but we live in New York and at the end of the day I think having civil marriage recognized within a society is very important, for reasons of health benefits and social security benefits, and inheritance and rights, if someone gets sick and is in the hospital. But at the end of the day a marriage isn’t about a piece of paper; it’s about the love that people share.

So that’s my first crush, but let me tell you what other crushes I have.

Matthew McConaughey, I have a big crush on him. I have a crush on Keanu Reeves. I have a crush on Matthew Fox, you know Matthew Fox in the show Lost? Party of Five? I have a crush on him.

Who else do I have a crush on?

Not George Clooney?

I don’t have a crush on George Clooney. He seems like a real great person and I think he has a lot of style but I just don’t have a crush on him. I kind of have a crush on Jodie Foster, too. A girl crush. I get girl crushes a lot, actually.

What does it mean if a gay guy has a girl crush?

I think it’s the same thing if a straight guy has a gay crush on another guy. Does that make sense? If a straight man has a crush on another man I think it’s the same thing. Just like an affection.

But not sexual?

Not really. It’s kind of sexual in the sense that there’s an appreciation for the physical part of that person, but you know when it comes down to it, do I actually wanna follow through? No.

You know, I think that guys experience crushes all the time with their friends and stuff. They don’t think of it as a crush and they would never express it as a crush, but it’s just like a bond and it’s admiration and it’s respect and they might even understand that the person is good-looking. But it doesn’t mean that they want to, you know, have sex with somebody.

It’s your second time to come here. What do you think the Filipino guy needs to improve on?

Oh, gosh, um… let me think… This is in the area of clothing that I’ve noticed, but a lot of sort of wearing clothes that are too big, oversized and it’s a real common problem, actually. At least it’s common in the United States. It seems in certain European countries that the guys don’t make that same mistake. Like the shoulder seam is way down here. It’s very interesting. I don’t understand what that’s about.

Because it’s hot, so they want their clothes loose…

Right, that makes sense. I also think that some guys are very physically fit when they’re younger and they can eat whatever they want to – ice cream and not work out, or it all becomes very easy for them. And then guys, when they hit that certain age, it’s like (snaps fingers) gain weight right here, and things don’t come easy. And I think part of it might just have to do with wanting to hide that, you know what I mean? They have a nice big chest and big arms, so they wear baggy clothes to cover their belly. That’s my observation of the guys here.

Have you seen those Asian men who pluck their eyebrows? What do you think of that?

You know, I’m not a fan of overworked brows for men; I’m really not. I love the effort that you’re trying and that’s good. But a man’s eyebrows should just be natural; it should be clean. If there is a unibrow, that should be cleaned up. Or a defined brow with an excess hair below or above, that should be cleaned up. But basically a brow should be natural and clean. There’s nothing wrong with cleaning it up but it should not be highly arched or defined. There’s something about masculine features that require it to have some bushy eyebrows there.

Do you also give grooming tips/advice to your boyfriend?

Do I? Totally. Absolutely. ‘Cause he’s not into that stuff at all. And it’s all fine because my boyfriend is like a lot of straight guys. Like if I’m shopping and I’m gonna go pick up and buy like an exfoliator, he wants to know how much it is and why am I spending that much money on that and you don’t need that. And so it goes in one ear and out the other and I buy what I want.

The next thing you know, we’re in the bathroom getting ready and he’ll say, "So what does that do, what is that for?" And the next thing, two weeks later, my exfoliator that he did not want me to buy is gone ‘cause he’s been using it and here I am without an exfoliator.

So I do give him advice and he does follow it, but he plays coy. In the beginning he says, "Oh, I don’t need that," but privately, on his own, he starts to experiment with the things that I’m doing.

And so now he even says, "Well, can you do me a facial today?" So I might give him some extractions and then we’ll use a moisturizer together. Maybe we’ll do like a glycolic peel together. You know, but he’ll ask for that now. So yes, I do give him advice.
