Grade school kids draw to transfer Mali to a sanctuary

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The call to transfer Mali, the Manila Zoo’s ailing and solitary 38-year-old elephant, to a sanctuary has just been joined by scores of new voices. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia has received drawings and cards from nearly 2,000 students from schools in the metro area who have indicated their support for relocating Mali — who is suffering from boredom and loneliness as well as potentially deadly foot disorders — to a reputable sanctuary in Thailand. PETA continues to receive drawings from students every day.

In her current environment, Mali is cruelly denied socialization, stimulation, room to explore, and everything else that’s natural and important to her. She is forced to endure intensive confinement, loneliness, boredom, and isolation in an area that’s a tiny fraction of the size of her natural habitat.

A growing list of international experts — including world-renowned elephant veterinarian Dr. Henry Richardson, who examined Mali — are also calling for Mali’s immediate transfer to a sanctuary, where she can live out her days in good health and dignity as well as in the crucial company of other elephants.

“When you ask kids if Mali should stay at the zoo for them to look at or if she should go to be with other elephants,” shares PETA Asia director Jason Baker, “the kids always know what is the right thing to do — send her to a sanctuary. Kids can be so selfless, and it is really inspiring.”

Students who wish to show their support for Mali can mail artwork and cards to PETA at Unit 706, Fedman Building, 199 Salcedo Street, Legaspi Street, Makati City, 1229.
