Modern Living

Tonight’s the night

- Tim Yap -

When Anton San Diego started Philippine Tatler, people thought he was crazy. They said a magazine like Tatler did not have a market in this country. After all, there are only 500 rich people (or fewer) in the Philippines. Or so they thought.

Now in its sixth year of chronicling high society — “the spirit of high society” — Tatler continues to soar. As of last count, there are already countless other glistening titles, all documenting the lifestyles of the rich and famous. To its credit, Tatler continues to be THE pioneer, still trailblazing the zine scene with society scoops, talk of the town covers and a constantly evolving (always getting better and better) look. Their outlook is global, focusing on Filipinos who have made their mark here and abroad.

Often controversial, Anton opts for the higher road — choosing not to focus on nasty rumors (and there are lots running around the gross grapevine) and cheap gossip. (Ladies and gents, as we all know, karma is now digital.) “What will I do that for? To sell five more copies of the magazine?” Anton whispers to me over a drink at Martini’s. Now how’s that for a money shot?

The annual Tatler Ball is the crowning glory of the glossy game — the most awaited event this side of high society. And this event happens tonight.

So today, as you read Supreme, expect all the top salons to be fully booked from the time they open, designers to be doing last-minute touches to their creations and ladies (and some gents) losing sleep about what to wear from head to toe. The conversations tomorrow will definitely start with, “Oh, I love what you were wearing! Who made it? You look svelte! Who’s your doctor?” It’s all part of the fun, really.

The fun doesn’t stop there. Beneath the surface glamour lies a heart for charity. Every year, Philippine Tatler chooses a beneficiary to support via donations from its affluent and powerful guests. This year, they chose Gawad Kalinga whose slogan is “No more slums. No more violence. No more poverty.” And who better to spread that message than to the Tatler set?

Every year, the celebration just keeps getting better. What does Anton have up his sleeve this time around? “Expect something different.”

This space features some of last year's Supreme scene stealers. I am quite excited to see how they'll look tonight.

I can’t wait.
