MANILA, Philippines — The National Security Council (NSC) will investigate alleged financial inflows from China to Philippine-based companies linked to the family of Vice President Sara Duterte, amid concerns over possible foreign interference and national security implications.

National Security Adviser Eduardo Oban Jr. said the NSC is taking information presented during Duterte’s ongoing Senate impeachment trial seriously and will coordinate with intelligence and investigative agencies to assess the reported transactions.

“While the proceedings remain ongoing and the information presented should be properly examined within established legal processes, the reported transactions and any credible information involving significant foreign financial flows that may bear upon the country’s national security warrants
careful, in-depth and responsible assessment,” Oban said.

“The NSC will look into the information presented and, as a matter of policy, continue to task the intelligence and investigative agencies and coordinate with relevant government institutions to assess the national security implications, if any, arising from the reported transactions,” he added.

Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. earlier expressed similar concern over information on alleged Chinese financial links raised by former senator Antonio Trillanes IV.

“The allegations of former senator Trillanes, if substantiated, raise serious implications for national security,” Teodoro said. “He should submit the evidence in his possession, if any, to our law enforcement authorities so the matter can be thoroughly investigated.”

Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesman for the West Philippine Sea, retired rear admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, also pointed to the potential security implications of foreign funding.

“I’d also like to highlight the statement of the National Security Council, of the NSA that the appropriate government agencies are looking into this. And if proven, again, there will be security implications for actions like this,” Trinidad said.
