MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines reiterated its support for the application of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste to become the 11th member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), saying it should be granted its rightful place in the regional community.

In a meeting between Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario and Timor-Leste Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister Hernani Coelho da Silva in Malaysia on Tuesday, Del Rosario said the Philippines looks forward to having Timor-Leste as the newest ASEAN member.

On the sidelines of the 48th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Del Rosario also urged Timor-Leste to meet the criteria for admission as prescribed under the ASEAN Charter.

“We reiterate our support for Timor-Leste’s membership in ASEAN. Its integration should be viewed from an overall strategic standpoint,” he added.

Del Rosario and Coelho discussed cooperation in defense, education, health and technical concerns, among others. Both ministers expressed their desire for continued engagement and collaboration for the benefit of the Filipino and Timorese people.

Del Rosario also hopes that Timor-Leste diplomats could continue participating in courses offered by the Foreign Service Institute of the Department of Foreign Affairs, which helps in the professional development of diplomats.

The Philippines and Timor-Leste have maintained a strong partnership since the establishment of bilateral relations in May 2002. Tuesday’s meeting was the first between the foreign affairs officials since Coelho assumed office in February.
