Manuel Quezon grandson slams biopic, lashes at Jerrold Tarog, Jericho Rosales
MANILA, Philippines — A recent screening of "Quezon" got heated following a tirade by a grandson of the film's subject, second Philippine president Manuel L. Quezon.
A talkback session with director Jerrold Tarog and several cast members, including lead star Jericho Rosales who plays Quezon, was held in a Makati mall cinema after a special screening where Ricky Quezon-Avancena took control of the microphone.
Avancena asked Tarog if the latter intended for the film to be a political satire. When the director replied in the affirmative, Avancena doubled down on the movie being "a joke."
"Joke pala ito! It's a joke," Avancena told the audience as seen in a viral video posted on X.

At this point Rosales borrowed Tarog's microphone to remind Avancena there was a time and place for the latter's grievances and there were other audience members with questions, but Avancena asked for one more minute to finish his rebuke.
Avancena told Tarog that in making "Quezon" the filmmaker "opened Pandora's Box," and gave examples of other things the Quezon family had done in the past.
"Hindi niyo alam ano ginawa niyo dahil kayo, gusto niyo kumita ng pera at sumikat... mahiya kayo," Avancena said, claiming they were discrediting his family. "China-channel ko ngayon ang aking lolo sa paksa ninyo, 'P****ta kayo, mga p******ina niyo, kupal kayo!'"
Later on Facebook, Avancena shared the screening was his third time seeing "Quezon" that week, and called out Rosales for "canceling a Quezon" because of the actor's attempt to block a response from a direct descendant of Quezon.
"Nilalako nila ang pambababoy sa alaala ng mga taong patay, at 'di nila ako hahayaan na magpahayag ng damdamin at ipagtanggol sila?" Avancena said.
Avancena clarified he wasn't asking people to avoid the film, but called on the public to watch then join him in defending his grandfather on social media.
"Nobody said he was a hero, so labas s'ya sa kabaduyan ng 'Bayaniverse'. He was a President, and the best ever most incorruptible," Avancena ended.
