Britney Spears objects paying for mother's legal fees

MANILA, Philippines — Britney Spears, through her laywer Matthew Rosengart, expressed her disinterest in paying for her mother's legal fees in the aftermath of the pop star's now-concluded conservatorship that lasted over 13 years.

Britney's mother Lynne reportedly spent $663,000 (more than P34 million) in legal fees to help end her eldest daughter's conservatorship, and is now demanding payment as she claimed to have begun the legal process for her freedom.

In 2019, Lynne hired a group of lawyers to see what assistance could be offered to Britney to free her from the control of registered conservator Jaime Spears, whom Lynne divorced in 2002. According to Lynne's attorney, Britney "enthusiastically agreed" to getting help.

When Lynne's representation filed a petition asking for payment on November 1, 2021, just a couple of days before the conservatorship was terminated, Britney said in a now-deleted Instagram post that while Jaime began the conservatorship, it was Lynne who gave him the idea.

Rosengart filed papers at a Los Angeles court to argue Britney does not have to pay the tab, saying there is no legal basis. The motion also said that Lynne's petition was "filed in bad faith," also noting that Lynne was a third party in the conservatorship.

The lawyer added that in the duration of the conservatorship, Britney spent almost $1.7 million (P87.5 million) for Lynne to live in a “large, expensive house” in Louisiana, as well as covered other related expenses. Apart from that, Rosengart also highlighted that Britney supported her whole family for years.

The hearing on this issue has been rescheduled to July 22, allotting time for the judge to read all the papers associated with the request.
