Kelvin wants listeners to ‘slow dance’ with him

Kelvin Miranda has reminded fans that he can sing with the release of Slow Dance. His newest single is a welcome addition to the Kapuso actor’s recordings of official soundtracks for entertainment and news and public affairs shows. They are Two of a Kind and Basta Masaya Tayo for The Lost Recipe and Maniwala Ka Lang for Wish Ko Lang.

Through the GMA Music platform, the listening public can expect more singing from Kelvin. Perhaps his game plan in exploring another creative side of him is to take things slowly but surely.

“In Grade Five, I started to watch theatrical productions and plays, and I told myself that I wanted to give acting a try,” said Kelvin on how he discovered his interest in music and performance in a recent media conference. “I hoped then that I would have a chance.”

In fact, the young Kelvin prayed for it. During this time, he would listen to American standards, Western music and punk rock and later on to Original Pilipino Music (OPM). The latter comes in handy since as an actor, he can’t help but perform Filipino songs in shows. The realization that he had the knack for singing happened in his senior high school years.

“I like listening to music. When I was in Grade 11, there was a school event and I was handpicked to perform,” recalled he. “Prior to that, I used to play the guitar and accompany the singer. Since the singer was not around, I did the playing of the guitar and also the singing. The teachers and students liked it.” That turn of events foreshadowed what else he could offer, aside from acting, to fans: singing.

Kelvin’s Slow Dance has the feel of a ballad song and, as you have guessed it, a waltz, which is the perfect background music for prom. This brings everyone, particularly senior high school and high school students, to the growing-up moments of socializing with fellow teens in a soiree and experiencing their first dance. Given the status quo these days, they can’t afford it. But it can be done through songs like Slow Dance.

According to Kelvin, the song was already made when he was approached to record it. He met the good news with surprise and excitement.

“Medyo hindi ako naniniwala, ako ba talaga ang kakanta?” said he. “The first time I heard it (through a demo tape), I found it catchy and since first time kong kumanta ng alanganin yung tempo ko at bilang, medyo nahirapan akong aralin, ipasok kung papaano yung bawat transition ng lyrics.”

As expected, Kelvin navigated the creative process well with the support of his team. Slow Dance was written by Jomari Felices Jintalan, arranged by Zak Yokingco and produced by Paulo Agudelo.

“As for my perspective of the song, it’s not just for special someone,” said he of the song’s message, “at lagi ko namang sinasabi na slow down, yun ang dating sa akin (ng message) is take it easy, you take your time. The song is hopeful and it’s one of the things I liked about it. And it is what I (also) offer to my fans. For me, I always try my best in everything that I do. Perhaps that’s the reason why I’m always given the opportunity. I’m just thankful and grateful to be chosen to sing the song.”

Does acting help Kelvin in his singing? His answer was a resounding yes.

“For me, I just feel the song (and its message) so I can share the story to my audience and make them feel the music,” said he. “Malaking tulong yung pagiging actor ko kasi nalalaman ko kung papano ko siya mararamdaman, kung paano ko siya kinakanta. But it still depends on the perspective of a singer, how he or she approaches the song. I have to put feelings to it.”

As for Slow Dance being an unexpected blessing, after another blessing, which was the successful run of Stories from the Heart: Loving Miss Bridgette in which he starred in, Kelvin said: “Lahat naman po na nangyayari sa atin ay unexpected (Everything that happens to us I think unexpected). So, pinagpapasalamat ko ang lahat ng dumadating sa akin, ultimo maliit na bagay, kahit yung mga bagay na hindi maganda (I appreciate every little thing and even the not-so-good thing that come in my life). But it depends on how a person handles or looks at it. I’m always thankful, minsan naaapektuhan pero napag-aaralan kung papaano makausad (Sometimes I get affected but I learn to move on from it). I’m happy and (the song is) an unexpected blessing.”

Since he knows how to count his blessings, Kelvin will have more that come his way.
