Sean Kingston beautiful girls

SOUNDS FAMILIAR - Baby A. Gil - The Philippine Star

By this time around you must have already lost count of the number of times you heard Beautiful Girls playing in your head. Written and performed by the only 17-year-old Sean Kingston, the song has just the right strut quality that leads listeners to square their shoulders and sashay as though the world is theirs.  Think John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Best of all, it has this crazy hook that just goes on and on and on.

Beautiful Girls, which is about a guy getting dumped by beautiful girls, became one of last year’s biggest sellers. The song made No. 1 everywhere. It was in My Space, Yahoo Music, AOL Music and iTunes. It won the Teen Choice Award for Choice Music R&B Track. You name a hot space and Beautiful Girls was in it and No. 1. Why it even toppled superrapper Kanye West’s Stronger from the top of Billboard Magazine’s Hot 100 where it stayed for five weeks.  Of course, along with this success, Kingston became 2007’s sensational hip-hop discovery.

Chubby, baby-faced and talented, Kingston has a voice that is as sweet as Akon’s or Babyface and certainly does not look like a kid who would get dumped by girls. They all find him cute and lovable. Their parents love him too because Sean’s rap is wholesome and sunshiny. There are no cuss words or diss topics for him.  Not even negative sentiments. His songs are actually mostly happy and just a wee bit sexy.

Kingston’s life before Beautiful Girls was not anything like the things he sings about. Truth to tell, he was even homeless for a while.  It is said that he slept in bus stations after his mother and sister went to jail for tax evasion. He was just a kid and the experience could have caused him to turn to committing petty crimes or worse. But he loved making music so much and it was this, which kept him going and hopeful of better times.

Sean Kingston is also the title of his album and he introduces himself and the CD with a cut titled Kingston. Then there are the new favorite Take You There, Me Love, the phenomenally catchy Beautiful Girls, plus Dry Your Eyes, Got No Shorty, There’s Nothin’ featuring Paula Deanda, I Can Feel It, Drummer Boy, Your Sister, That Ain’t Right and Change. The whole package is mainly hip-hop mixed with pop and reggae, well-produced and spiced with interesting samplings.

The proof that Beautiful Girls was no fluke and that Kingston is no flash in the pan is in the latest Billboard Top 100 Songs tabulation where his second hit Take You There is still safely lodged on No. 8 after 16 weeks in the list.

In the Top 10 are Low by Flo Rida featuring T-Pain; With You by Chris Brown; Don’t Stop the Music by Rihanna; No One by Alicia Keys; Love Song by Sarah Bareilles; Apologize by Timbaland feat.  OneRepublic; Sensual Seduction by Snoop Dogg; Take You There by Sean Kingston; Sorry by Buckcherry; and Independent by Webble, Lil’ Phat & Lil’ Boosie.

The breezy surfing sound of Jack Johnson is still the No. 1 seller after three weeks in the Top 200 Albums list. Sleep Through the Static by Jack Johnson; Back to Black by Amy Winehouse; As I Am by Alicia Keys; 2008 Grammy Nominees by Various Artists; River: The Joni Letters by Herbie Hancock; Juno, the motion picture soundtrack by Various Artists; Taylor Swift by Taylor Swift; Detours by Sheryl Crow; Growing Pains by Mary J. Blige; and Step Up 2: The Streets, the movie soundtrack.

More on Kingston

Sean Kingston’s Beautiful Girls takes second place to the troubled Britney Spears’ Gimme More in the Hits 2008 CD. This is a sampler containing some of the most popular tunes nowadays and should be a great buy for those who only like to collect the hit songs and not the entire albums.

Other cuts included are If That’s OK with You by UK X Factor winner Shayne Ward; No One by Alicia Keys; Until the End of Time by Justin Timberlake; Hot by Avril Lavigne; Do It Well by Jennifer Lopez; Jenny by The Click Five; I Don’t Wanna Be In Love by Good Charlotte and others. Added bonus is Psycho Teddy whose wacky dance video is in the enhanced portion of the CD.  For all you know he might be this summer’s Sean Kingston.
