The wonderful world of make-believe

It’s not often that we find adults interested in fantasy films or fairy tales.

It seems a bit embarrassing to be proud of the fact that we still dream of fairy tales coming true.

Magical moments just seem so “corny,” when deep inside, we can’t help but get butterflies each time we’re exposed to such things.

A lot of people I know still admit to seeing me as a very serious person or someone who couldn’t enjoy watching cartoons and such things. But the fact is, my heart is made up of fairy tales. And I believe a lot of us are that way.

Make believing and having faith in certain things that may not be seen through our naked eyes bring color to our lives. Come on, I know some of us must daydream once in a while, right?

Sometimes, when we’re running late, we wish our cars could fly across EDSA. When we just don’t feel like getting up for work, we want to set the alarm on “pause” mode.

When I run out of ideas to daydream about, it’s time I hit the theaters and create a new imaginative world for myself. It’s a world where I can literally create and re-create anything and everything around me. It’s quite fun imagining that we could just re-design our environment in a snap of a finger.

I couldn’t remember when was the last time I saw a fantasy film.

I was feeling a little sick from the weather and all the negativity my mind was getting from the latest happenings in Glorietta 2. I somehow felt the need to recreate a new surrounding for myself by perhaps watching a film and make-believing for a few hours.

My girlfriends and I went to the theaters and decided to watch Stardust. We were a bit late and missed the first couple of minutes, but luckily we were just in time for the main event when the star came to Earth.

The story takes place in England where a wall divides a town into two: The real world and the magical one.

Claire Danes plays Yvaine the falling star while Charlie Cox is Tristan, one of the many interested in catching the star.

Michelle Pfeiffer is Lamia, a powerful witch who is also after the star, and Robert DeNiro is Captain Shakespeare with a twist.

I say with a twist because I nearly fell off my seat when I began to recognize the spice they added to his character.

It couldn’t get any better than that, so you’ve got to see it. There are many other interesting characters in the film, but they’re my few favorite ones.

Pfeiffer played a shocking role. They transformed her to look very old and ugly, but balanced it with a few scenes where she looked beyond perfect.

Danes’ character was very charming and cute, especially in her scenes with Tristan.

It wasn’t exactly a flawless performance from her. It was the role itself that dragged the movie.

I would have preferred it if someone else played the role of Yvaine. Thank God for wonderful director/writer Matthew Vaughn and the modest amount of effects that may help you get pass the rough edges, like Danes.

Overall, the movie is worth watching in spite of the traffic, the rain and all that. The rest of the other actors are perfect and the story is definitely a mind pleaser.

Watching movies like this is a great way to get away from the world we live in. Relaxed and inspired is how you will feel on your way home from the theaters after watching the movie.
