Araneta Center takes one step closer to its vision of becoming the commercial and business district of Quezon City with a groundbreaking ceremony that marks the beginning of the construction of a P2-billion shopping mall.
The "Gateway Mall" will have 100,000 square meters of gross floor area with five levels occupied by an estimated 170 food and retail stores. Focusing on providing the best in entertainment, Gateway Mall will also have a Cineplex with 10 movie theaters with a centralized ticketing facility.
Integrated atop the shopping mall will be a seven-storey office tower, which Araneta Center call "cyber offices." It will be equipped with advanced telecom facilities and broadband technology. These will be designed to meet the unique requirements of modern-day entrepreneurs engaged in the business of information technology.
Gateway's direct connection to the LRT 2 and MRT 3 will make it accessible to those coming from Aurora Boulevard, the main highway of Edsa, and Rizal and Marikina.
The Gateway, so named for Araneta Center's goal to become the hub of the commercial and business pulse of Quezon City, is part of an ambitious 20-year MasterPlan to transform Araneta Center into a prime business and retail complex that will compete with similar developments in Ortihgas and Makati.
This redevelopment project places ultimate comfort and convenience first above all else, keeping in mind the lifestyle of a population that has become more and more discriminating. Thus, the design of the new "Araneta Center" will put shopping and entertainment destinations side by side with the business centers, all within walking distance.
In 2000, Araneta Center set into motion the first phase of the MasterPlan with the renovation of Araneta Coliseum and Farmers Plaza. The first phase is a 600,000 square meters development concept that includes the Gateway Mall and its surrounding offices and entertainment facilities. Add it to the existing retail space of the present Araneta Center, and you have the largest shopping center complex in the world at 972,000 square meters, according to consulting firm RTKL International Ltd. from the United States, one of the eight foreign consultants of the MasterPlan.
