MANILA, Philippines — Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMP) is recalling over 12,000 Hilux units for brake booster inspection and replacement.

In a letter to Department of Trade and Industry Consumer Policy and Advocacy Bureau director Marimel Porciuncula dated Dec. 8, TMP first vice president Rommel Gutierrez said the firm is conducting a special service campaign covering 12,016 Hilux units produced from June 21 to Dec. 20, 2018.

He said the service campaign is being undertaken as the piston strength in the vehicle’s brake booster could degrade due to improper molding condition of the resin piston.

If this happens, the piston may break by operating the brake pedal repeatedly.

In the worst case, this may lead to loss of braking assist while driving that could increase the vehicle stopping distance.

“With this, we will inspect, and if necessary, replace the brake booster with a new one, at no cost to our customers,” Gutierrez said.

TMP is now preparing the replacement parts for the service campaign.

Gutierrez said all affected customers would be informed of the service campaign through official notification letters.

Inspection and replacement of the brake booster would be conducted in TMP’s dealerships.

TMP customers can use the firm’s online service campaign checker https://toyota.com.ph/service-campaign to know if their vehicles are affected by any recall.
