Koncz: Time to keep quiet

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Floyd Mayweather Jr. was off to Jamaica, on his Gulfstream G5 private jet, as word spread the other day that his fight with Manny Pacquiao is a done deal.

The TMZ.com report that said so was immediately quashed.

Yesterday, the undefeated American posted a picture on Instagram, of him in a hammock, all by himself, enjoying life on the beach.

“Laying back, relaxing, enjoying good weather, palm trees and piña coladas. While they continue to lie about making the fight…,” he said.

“I’m just going to continue to travel and explore the world on my private jet,” added the post that carried the hashtag #FightNotMadeYet.

Obviously, it’s not a done deal on Mayweather’s side.

Yesterday, Pacquiao was at his Larchmont Park home in Los Angeles, and on Instagram, was shown playing the guitar as his wife Jinkee sang a gospel song.

The Filipino boxing icon was enjoying his own quiet time. A couple of days ago, the couple went out to watch the movie “American Sniper.”

The STAR spoke to Pacquiao’s chief adviser, Mike Koncz, yesterday morning, and sought the latest on the highly-elusive fight.

“I don’t have any comments right now,” said Koncz from the other end of the line.

“I think we’re talking to the media too much right now. It’s time to be quiet. No comments,” said Pacquiao’s Canadian adviser.

After Wednesday’s highly-publicized meetings between Mayweather and Pacquiao in Miami, there was great anticipation of a major announcement.

Reports said the fight was close to being made, and an announcement may come as early as Monday, which is Super Bowl day.

But it seems there’s nothing to announce.

“We’ll see. In the meantime, Manny’s relaxing with his wife and enjoying quality time and playing some basketball. Everything is good,” said Koncz.

Top Rank chief Bob Arum returned a call to The STAR yesterday morning and remained optimistic that the fight would happen.

“Everything is fine. We’re working on it,” he said.

“We’re negotiating and going over paragraph by paragraph. I don’t know what happens but obviously we’re optimistic or else we wouldn’t be doing this,” he said.

Arum did not say exactly what they’re “going over” but was surprised to hear that Mayweather was in Jamaica.

“I thought he was going to the Super Bowl,” he said.
