MANILA, Philippines - Routs marked the opening of the 10th Freego Cup Tuesday as reigning NCAA champion Mapua (Malayan School) and National University crushed their respective rivals at the Buddhacare gym in QC.
The Red Robins bucked a slow start to clobber the short-handed defending champion Chiang Kai Shek College Blue Dragons, 88-57, with Brian Lacap leading the attack with 17 points.
The Blue Dragons, who represented National Capital Region in the recent Palarong Pambansa in Antique, missed several key players who opted to take a rest after winning the Palaro gold medal.
With six players scoring eight points or more, the Bullpups got back at UAAP tormentor Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws, 76-54.
Cyril Gonzales scored 13 points for NU, which was swept by FEU in their title series last February.
La Salle Greenhills, meanwhile, outlasted University of the East, 85-73, behind the 18-point output of JD Cagulangan while Jose Rizal University trounced Lyceum, 87-77.
Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas debuts today against Lyceum.
The annual cagefest is backed by Smart, Powerhouse and Home Depot.
