The Spider undergoes surgery for leg fracture

MANILA, Philippines - Anderson “The Spider” Silva underwent a successful surgery to repair a leg he broke in a middleweight Ultimate Fighting Championship title fight with Chris Weidman in Las Vegas, Nevada Sunday.

According to a statement released by Zuffa, LLC, which owns UFC, the best and most prestigious fight outfit in the world, Dr. Steven Sanders, UFC’s orthopedic surgeon, performed the surgery by inserting an intramedullary rod into Anderson’s left tibia.

Thankfully, Silva, whose legend started when he stunned then middleweight titleholder Rich Franklin at UFC 64 in 2006 and defended his crown a record 15 straight times before running into Weidman, is now in stable condition and according to Sanders, there will be no more separate surgery.

“Following the UFC 168 main event, former champion Anderson Silva was taken to a local Las Vegas hospital where he underwent a surgery to repair a broken left leg,” said the UFC in a statement.

“Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time,” it added.

The UFC also said Silva was thankful for the prayers and support from the fans.

“Anderson is deeply touched by the outpouring of support from his fans and the entire MMA community,” it said.

As to the 38-year-old Silva’s future, it remains uncertain and cloudy.

“Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months,” it said. “There has been no immediate decision about his future, and he would kindly ask for privacy at this time as he deals with his injury and prepares to return home to recover.”
