MANILA, Philippines - Talk n Text players Jimmy Alapag and Jared Dillinger yesterday expressed surprise over reports that the Bureau of Internal Revenue had  filed tax evasion charges yesterday against them for allegedly failing to file income tax returns.

The two, according, to the reports, were assessed a combined tax deficiency of P31.23M.

In their joint statement, Alapag and Dillinger said they have yet to submit the documents requested by the BIR. The deadline is set March 18, Monday. Before the BIR can file charges, it must first review the documents, assess the fines and file charges if they fail to pay the assesed fees.

According to the BIR, Alapag failed to file his income tax returns as well as value added tax returns from 2007 to 2010. His tax liability was computed at P17.86 million, inclusive of surcharge and interest.

An investigation conducted by the BIR showed that Alapag earned close to P4 million from PLDT in 2007. His earnings from Smart Communications, a unit of PLDT, amounted to P8.77 million in 2012 and the BIR placed his total income as a pro cager at P32.28 million.

Dillinger, on the other hand, was found to have failed to file his income tax returns from 2008 to 2011. He also did not file his percentage tax return for 2008 and failed to file his value added tax returns from 2009 to 2012.

His tax deficiency stood at P13.37 million, including surcharge and interest, the BIR said.

Dillinger earned P694,000 from PLDT in 2008. His earnings from Smart amounted to P6.48 million in 2012. Records showed that his income as a ballplayer has totaled P22.19 million.

In a joint press statement issued late last night Alapag and Dillinger said it is not possible for the BIR to be filing tax evasion charges against them because they are still in the process of completing the documents for review of the BIR.

The official statement dated yesetrday reads:

On Feb. 22, 2013, Messrs. Jimmy Alapag and Jared Dillinger received an audit notice from the Bureau of Internal Revenue. While in the process of compiling documents requested by the BIR, Jimmy and Jared received on March 13 a second notice. This second notice, dated 11th March, requested for the reproduction of a number of documents, the deadline of submission (of) which was set on 18th March. Jimmy and Jared were therefore extremely surprised with the press statements earlier today announcing the complaint being filed against them.
