Agui ladies end drought, top WGAP leg

-

MANILA, Philippines - Aguinaldo finally nailed the big one as it held off Tagaytay Highlands with a 161 aggregate to fashion out a three-point victory in the premier class of the WGAP (Women’s Golf Association of the Phils.) circuit’s fifth leg at Riviera’s Couples course last Monday.

Josie Untal and Mabel Salivio came through with 43 and 42 points, respectively under the Modified Stableford scoring system while Matet Salivio and Karen Kime backed them up with 39 and 37 points, respectively, as Aguinaldo outlasted Highlands, which had a 158, in the 10-to-play, four-to-count format.

It was an inspiring win for Aguinaldo, which finished runner-up in the kickoff leg at Valley and in the fourth leg at Forest Hills last month, as it boosted its bid for the overall championship in Class A of the annual tournament among the leading golfing ladies of the country’s top clubs.

Highlands, which has three third place finishes, settled for second with that 158 behind Sandy Romualdez’s 41 points, Rosario Dimson’s 40, Farah Imperial’s 39 and Maripaz Domingo’s 38.

Sta. Elena, with Alice Jose shooting 40 points, Carina Ricamonte and Therese Dabao turning in a pair of 39s, and Carmela Lee adding a 38, assembled a 156 to finish third in a closely-fought contest organized by WGAP.

Canlubang and Alabang finished tied for fourth at 146 followed by fourth leg winner Forest Hills (144), Villamor (128), Valley Golf and Riviera.

Riviera used its familiarity with the layout as it also hacked out a close win in Class B, scoring 157 and nipping Alabang by two points. Gilda Medestomas led the hosts’ charge with 47 points while Joong Sook Kim, Raquel Banawa and Rosanna Rios added 41, 36 and 33 points, respectively.
