Unbreakable eyes PCSO Cup today

-
Unbreakable, fast emerging as one of the Triple Crown favorites this year, puts his unblemished track record on the line when the PCSO Grand Championship Cup, with a guaranteed prize of P600,000, is held today at the Santa Ana Park.

Fresh from his impressive victory in last month’s Philracom Chairman’s Cup honoring Antonio Lagdameo, the dark bay colt known for his big finishing kick will try to stamp his class against a competitive field of fellow three-year-olds.

Also seeing action in the 1,500-meter race are eight other chargers led by Golden Ballet, last year’s top two-year-old, who is out to avenge her only defeat to Unbreakable in the Chairman’s Cup.

The other entries are Praetorian, Mighty Strong, Security Risk, Rosewood, Cutting Edge, The Dominator and Magical Mark. Runner-up in today’s race will receive P200,000; P100,000 third; and P50,000 fourth.

Today’s race leads to the coveted Triple Crown Series starting with the first leg on May 19.

"More than a championship showcase, this event is intended to further promote the breeding and racing of quality race horses in the country as well as to enhance public patronage of an industry that has become a vital source of revenue income for our government and employment for many of our countrymen," said PCSO chairperson Ma. Livia "Honeygirl" de Leon.

To be ridden by 2001 Jockey of the Year Patricio Dilema, Unbreakable, owned by Jose Francisco Gonzales, will use the race as a final prep before formally launching his bid for the Triple Crown.

Providing an interesting sidelight to the PCSO main event would be the running of the P350,000 Philracom Hopeful stakes race for three-year-olds. What A Spell, surprise runner-up to Unbreakable in the recent Chairman’s Cup, is likely to be installed as the pre-race favorite. — Ramon Romualdez
