MANILA, Philippines — The city government of Caloocan has started preparations for the conduct of a plebiscite for the division of Barangay 176, also known as Bagong Silang, into six separate barangays, Mayor Dale Gonzalo Malapitan said yesterday.

Malapitan said the local government and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) would hold the plebiscite after President Marcos signed into law Republic Act 11993, which divides Bagong Silang, also known as Barangay 176, into Barangay 176-A, Barangay 176-B, Barangay 176-C, Barangay 176-D, Barangay 176-E and Barangay 176-F.

The law directed the Comelec to conduct and supervise the plebiscite within 90 days from its effectivity.

In a statement, Malapitan said the plebiscite would show “if residents of Barangay 176 support the law that was passed.”

Malapitan lauded Marcos for signing the measure into law, which was introduced by his father, Caloocan District 1 Rep. Oscar Malapitan, to bring more services to the residents of Bagong Silang, which he described as arguably “the largest barangay in the country.”

Whatever the result of the plebiscite, Malapitan vowed to respect the people’s decision and continue providing services to the residents of Bagong Silang.
