Tension grips Caloocan demolition
MANILA, Philippines — Tension rose during the demolition of houses in Caloocan City on Wednesday as some residents reportedly used children as human barricades.
Authorities have started the demolition in Sitio Gitna, Caybiga to give way for the Mindanao Avenue extension project of the Department of Public Works and Highways.
Videos posted on social media showed the children were used to stop the demolition team from dismantling structures in the area.
Personnel of the Caloocan police and the city’s social welfare and development office appealed to residents to spare their children from harm.
Reports said some parents resisted when police tried to take away their children, resulting in a commotion.
Caloocan police chief Col. Ruben Lacuesta said the demolition of houses was completed yesterday.
Qualified residents were brought to a relocation site provided by the National Housing Authority in Barangay 175, Camarin. Other families applied for the “Balik Probinsya” program of the local government., — Mark Ernest Villeza
