Globe employee volunteers give back

MANILA, Philippines - Unmindful of physical and mental fatigue after a whole day of office work, Globe employees again trooped to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) National Resource Operations Center (NROC) in Pasay City to assist in the repacking of relief goods for victims of super typhoon Odette.

“Gusto kong tumulong. Gusto kong may maibahagi sa iba kung anong kakayahan ang mayroon ako. (I want to help.  I want to share with others the things that I can do). For me, it’s a simple way of telling myself that I can do more than the requirements of corporate work. What I get is the fulfillment of getting paid with smiles full of hope,” said 23-year-old Derick Dimla, cadet engineer under the Network Technical Group.

For Derick, volunteering is part of life and which he has been doing for six years now.  “It just feels great to see people sacrificing time and effort just to help. I also feel I’m not alone in this journey of being of service to others. It’s not just a team, it’s a family,” he added.

Gener Monfero, a 38-year-old senior. credit specialist who has been doing volunteer work for Globe in the past four years, also echoed the words of Derick. “I decided to volunteer because it feels good when you’re able to help other people. Ever since I can remember, I always try to help out whenever I can because nothing beats the feeling of making another person happy,” he said.

Monfero added:  “It’s also fun to be a volunteer because you get to meet new people and have more friends. Kahit pagod ka galing from work, nawawala yung pagod mo kasi na-eenjoy mo yung ginagawa mo. Lalung masaya kapag nakita mo ang mga ngiti ng mga natulungan mo... kahit sa kaunting oras lang na naibigay. (Even if you’re tired from work, the tiredness disappears because you enjoy what you are doing.  It becomes more satisfying when you see the smiles on the face of those you were able to help….even if you were only able to give a fraction of your time).

Globe continues to harness the volunteerism spirit of its employees to cultivate a society that cares for humanity.  In fact, employee volunteerism is one of the five pillars of Globe Corporate Social Responsibility.  Dubbed iGive, the pillar mobilizes Globe employees to be active citizens by providing volunteer work via relief operations, fund-raising for conservation projects, and mentoring.

“Active citizenship through employee volunteerism is embedded in the Globe culture and way of life, that is why whenever there’s a call for help, our employees are always there to lend a hand. It is heartening to witness how our employees give time, money, and effort to assist those in need especially during trying times,” said Fernando Esguerra, OIC, Globe corporate social responsibility.

Due to their consistent participation in DSWD repacking operations, Globe employees have been twice lauded by DSWD Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman and have also been praised by President Benigno S. Aquino III for their help in Habagat operations last year.

Soliman have commended Globe employee volunteers for giving “time, talent, and treasure” to help the country move forward especially in times of disaster and to create positive changes in the lives of people they do not even know.
