’Smoking’ can save you from the COVID Delta variant
When normalcy seemed close at hand, Metro Manila found itself once again on a two-week lockdown, as a newer strain of COVID-19 — the Delta variant — began causing concern around the globe, particularly in poorer countries where the vaccine isn’t as accessible.
As expected, stricter protocols are in place. It now takes longer than usual to complete our to-do or shopping list because of stricter safety protocols being implemented. And, as much as we want to stay home to limit our exposure, there are times when going out is essential. Such is the case for homemakers who need to stock up on necessities, as well as entrepreneurs trying so hard to keep their businesses afloat.
And so, keeping our homes and business establishments from the threat of COVID-19 has become a tall order for every Juan. However, it’s easier said than done now that the World Health Organization (WHO) formally acknowledged that the Delta variant is “in the air you breathe.”
‘Smoking’ saves lives
Fighting COVID-19 Delta variant requires a better way to clean homes and business establishments than just using UV lights, liquid disinfectants, aerosols and misters. And it comes by way of smoke — Sanivir Smoke.
“Sanivir is a smoke disinfectant from Spain, which contains glutaraldehyde (3.5 percent) and orthopenylphenol (seven percent),” explains chemist Pinky Tobiano of KPP Powers Commodities Inc., the exclusive distributor of Sanivir in the country. “These two active ingredients have been proven by the CDC, as well as international laboratories, to kill COVID-19.”

“I’m immune-compromised,” shares Pinky, who is also a cancer survivor. “And so I’m at an increased risk of contracting the disease.”
But COVID-19 didn’t stop her from stepping out of her “safe” zone to help others in need. This chemist founded the Pinky Cares Foundation, which helps with the care of the 370 abandoned elder persons residing at Golden Acres (now GRACES), and the orphans at Reception Center for Children.
Pinky also started her own online show, Grateful Tuesdays, where she provides assistance to those who have been greatly affected by the pandemic and natural calamities.
“I wouldn’t be able to do all that without the help of Sanivir Smoke,” relates Pinky during the recent Sanivir Smoke webinar. “Before visiting these centers and the barangay halls, my team would go there first to do Sanivir Smoke disinfection to secure everyone’s safety.”

Not all disinfectants are created equal

But it only kills them upon contact. So if you’ve already disinfected the room with UV light, and someone infected enters the room, he/she could infect other people. Also, since it’s a form of radiation, it’s dangerous to the eyes.”

“Sanvir Smoke stays in the air for seven up to 14 days,” explains Tobiano. “In smoke disinfection, the molecules are lighter so they stay suspended in the air. The other disinfectants mentioned have heavier molecules.”
Versatile, simple and reliable, Sanivir Smoke can be used in several types of enclosed spaces — homes, offices, restaurants, warehouses, and even cars — without the need for special equipment.
Once applied, Sanivir keeps surfaces and areas protected for up to two weeks or 14 days (or depending on the foot traffic of people coming in and out of the disinfected area). The 25-gram canister (P1,750) covers areas of 30-50 square meters, ideal for living areas, cars, vans, condos, bedrooms, and conference rooms. Offices, warehouses, restaurants, and other areas that range between 500-550 square meters will need one kilogram of Sanivir.
Applying Sanivir takes only a few steps: Shake the can horizontally to loosen the powder inside the can and take out the wick’s plastic covering, place the can on a non-flammable surface such as a ceramic, tile or wooden block. Light the wick and leave the room for six to eight hours. Ventilate the area for an hour before using it again to remove the remaining smoke inside.
How effective is Sanivir Smoke?
“My team and I went to Balesin to disinfect the office of Bobby Ongpin,” shares Tobiano. “First, we swabbed the area to determine its bacterial account. And it was high: 97,000. After applying Sanivir Smoke, the bacterial count went down to 1,009. There was a 98-percent reduction.”
Aside from Balesin, The Farm at San Benito uses Sanivir Smoke as part of its stringent sanitation protocols.
