The Met honors Pitoy Moreno
The Metropolitan Museum of Manila recently hosted a poignant and elegant evening, “Remembering Pitoy Moreno,” in honor of the late fashion icon who shaped Philippine couture for over half a century. The event was chaired by Tina Colayco, Doris Magsaysay Ho and Fe Rodriguez who brought together Pitoy’s devoted clients, friends, and admirers to celebrate his indelible contribution to Filipino fashion and culture.
Known as the “Fashion Czar of Asia,” Jose “Pitoy” Moreno is remembered not just for his exquisite designs but for the personal care he poured into each creation. Among the attendees were generations of women who had worn his masterpieces through the most important milestones of their lives — from brides in the 1950s-‘70s who walked down the aisle in his intricately detailed gowns, to their daughters and granddaughters dressed by him for baptisms, debuts, and weddings. They remembered how Pitoy was not just a designer, but also a guiding hand — offering advice on makeup, jewelry, and even recommending the floral arrangements for the church and reception.
Beyond his work in the local fashion scene, Pitoy Moreno was an ambassador of Philippine culture to the world. His creations, inspired by traditional Filipino attire and handwoven fabrics, graced international runways and prestigious galas attended by global dignitaries, royalty, and nobility. In doing so, he elevated the country’s image abroad, showcasing the richness of Filipino craftsmanship and identity.
