Juan Ponce Enrile in the ICU, says Jinggoy
MANILA, Philippines — Chief presidential legal counsel Juan Ponce Enrile is in the intensive care unit (ICU) for pneumonia, according to Sen. Jinggoy Estrada on Tuesday, November 11.
Estrada, Enrile’s co-accused in the pork barrel scam, asked the Senate to pray for Enrile.
According to Estrada, he had a credible source, saying that the former Senate president was in the ICU due to pneumonia.
“I heard from a reliable source, a very, very reliable source, that he has slim chances of surviving. And I hope that all of us present here can have a short prayer to be led by Sen. Joel Villanueva,” Estrada said.
Reporters have asked the Palace for confirmation about Enrile’s condition but they have yet to respond.
Enrile is 101 years old, the oldest member of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Cabinet.
Enrile's last known appearance was during the promulgation of his final corruption case.
He attended the session through Zoom, where he was seen confined to a hospitaal bed. Enrile would eventually win the case, with the court acquitting him from his plunder case.
The veteran politician's career is expansive, playing key roles in Philippine history. Enrile played a role in the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.'s ascent to power during Martial Law, as well as his eventual ousting during the People Power Revolution.
